The total sum of the cars the guys from Car and Driver put through their Lightning Lap test this year added up to over $2.1 million. With models like the BMW M4 GTS in the line-up, it’s easy to see how it can get so expensive. Just like its little brother, the M2, the BMW M4 GTS also impressed being among the fastest 10 cars in the list, with a lap time of 2:52.9.

That’s under 3 minutes, a number hard to come by on the Virginia International Raceway where the laps took place. The M4 GTS was equipped with Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires and with KC Colwell behind the wheel. As an interesting side note, BMW sent Bill Auberlen over to VIR to make sure the driver got the most out of the performance vehicle on the track. With Bill on the sidelines, the guys only had to learn how ‘not to be afraid’ of the M4 and things worked out just fine.

The M4 GTS with its water-injection system and 500 PS managed to be as fast as 2:52.9 with Colwell behind the wheel but we’re guessing it could’ve been faster if Bill was manning it. However, it was faster than the Porsche Cayman GT4 by 1.1 seconds but fell short of the Mustang GT350R‘s 2:51.8 and the Acura NSX‘s 2:50.2 lap time. The Porsche 911 GT3 RS people keep comparing the M4 GTS to, did the same lap in 2:47, faster even than the McLaren 570S.
