The BMW X3 M continues to prepare for his debut in 2018. A recent video is apparently showing a sporty version of the BMW X3 G01 during testing on the Nürburgring Nordschleife, where the little brother of the X5 M has to prove himself now. It’s still not conclusively clear if this is the F97 X3 M or “only” the M Performance variant BMW X3 M40i, but nonetheless, the X3 family is bound to get some exciting sporty models.

What is certain is that both models are powered by a turbocharged inline six-cylinder and that they will be launched shortly after the G01 X3. BMW hasn’t also ruled out the possibility of launching another M Performance Automobile, but this time with a diesel unit under the hood. The presumed X3 M40d would deliver over 300 horsepower from the new quad-turbo six-cylinder unit.

The most important opponent on the scale of development is the Porsche Macan which is currently the undisputed champion in driving dynamics among compact SUVs. BMW is also looking at the upcoming Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 which aims to deliver over 500 horsepower to all four wheels. An X4M will also be thrown in the ring against these worthy competitors.

Sources say the front-end of the X3 M present itself flatter, yet beefier than the current model and with a new set of LED headlights. A character line runs from the front wheel arch on both door handles to the rear lights, which – are finally running used full LED technology. The F97 X3 M will sport the typical M design, with an aggressive front fascia including a sculpted bumper and large air curtains, along with flared wheel arches and a lower stance.

The driving dynamics and exterior design have always been a selling point for the X3 family, but the interior somewhat lacked that premium feel many customers requested. BMW seems to have learned a lesson here and the new X3 is likely to be not only technologically advanced, but also more luxurious.
