To say that the BMW X6 is sort of a disappointment to many car enthusiasts might actually be a bit kind. Let’s face it, only genuine BMW fans can find the charm in the X6, whereas most other enthusiasts find it to be a bit ridiculous. It was once on the receiving end of scathing ridicule on Top Gear and has generally received some relatively unkind comments from most publications. However, it has been a decent sales success since its inception and it’s been receiving a sales boost thanks to the song “Panda” by hip hop artist, Desiigner.
In February, Desiigner’s song Panda released and in it, some of the lyrics are “Black X6, Phantom / White X6 look like a panda.” I guess a white BMW X6 with black kidney grilles can have some resemblance to a panda, so it kind of makes sense. But since the song’s release, BMW X6 sales have increased to unusual levels. In January 2016, prior to the song’s release, BMW sold 385 X6 SUVs. In February, immediately following the late January release of the song, BMW sold 624 X6s. Considering BMW sold 402 X6s the previous February, that’s a big number for BMW in the same month.
It gets even better for the Bavarians, as in May of 2016, when “Panda” reached the #1 spot on Billboard’s Top 100, BMW sold 712 X6s. Now, obviously correlation does not necessarily imply causation, but every month where the song “Panda” reached some level of success, so did the BMW X6. While this could be coincidence, to quote a favorite movie of mine, “There is no coincidence, only the illusion of coincidence”.
Ok, so this is a bit too silly to get that deep, but it is interesting to note how the song’s success coincides with the success of the BMW X6, considering the song directly mentions the X6.[Source: GQ]
