The first BMW X3 M spy photos are here! After months of speculations, we can now show you the first X3 M prototypes. Spotted in Germany, the X3 M test mule reveals the typical M front-end with large air intakes and a design which resembles the one see on the M2. The X3 M also gets a more muscular look with flared whee larches, wider fenders and a lower stance. The rear-end shows the M signature quad tailpipes integrated into a redesigned and sporty bumper. Our source in Munich says the BMW X3 M carries the F97 internal designation.
To compete with the Audi RS Q5 and Mercedes GLC 55 AMG, the X3 M is based on the next generation midsize SUV. The new X3 has grown in size and strives for a more powerful appearance. Compared to the current model, the 2017 X3 is expected but slim down almost 100 kilograms, thanks to a new rear-wheel drive platform and lightweight materials.
The driving dynamics and exterior design have always been a selling point for the M family, but the interior of the new X3 and X3 M is expected to see a bump in quality and sportiness. BMW seems to have learned a lesson here and the new X3 is likely to be not only technologically advanced, but also more luxurious. Expect to see the usual M Sports Steering Wheel, carbon fiber and other M bits that will immediately identify the midsize SUV as a member of the Motorsport family. Just like virtually all the other BMW models of the recent past, the third generation of the BMW X3 features a detached infotainment display, which is carried out – most likely – just like the new 7 Series with a touchscreen. The instrument cluster of the X3 prototypes present a partly digital display.
The X3 M variant is likely to be powered by a 3.0 liter inline-six turbocharged engine delivering close to 500 horsepower.
The G01 X3 will be introduced in 2017, followed late that year or in early 2018 by the X3 M.
