Former Manchester United star and ex-Valencia coach, Gary Neville was seen in Manchester on Thursday riding his £100,000 BMW i8. The former right back who is also the assistant coach of the England national team apparently owns a Sophisto Grey BMW i8, joining other stars like Wayne Rooney, rapper Bow Wow and Rajesh Koothrappali from the hit-show “The Big Bang Theory.
BMW’s gasoline-battery hybrid sports car – priced at around $136,000 in the US is the the budget-minded alternative to those out-of-reach exotics. The special sports car aspect of the BMW i8 is unmistakable after just a glance at the spectacular scissor doors. The prominent scissor doors swing upwards when opened. It’s priced with competitors from Porsche, Jaguar and Mercedes-Benz, but it’s so completely different than anything else in its price range. The car most commonly compared to the i8 is the Porsche 911, as it also offers a great blend of sports car performance along with everyday usability at around the same price.
The BMW i8 is one of the most unique cars on the road today, packing a tiny, little three-cylinder engine mated to an electric motor with a second motor driving the front-wheels. This makes the plug-in hybrid i8 a front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive and an all-wheel drive vehicle. But if you think that the i8’s lack on conventional sports car powertrain will hinder its performance capabilities, you’d be wrong. The BMW i8 may not be the best sports car out there, but it’s damn good to drive and it combines its excellent driving dynamics with excellent efficiency and fantastic daily driving capabilities.
Gary Neville seems to believe so as well.
