When it arrives in 2017, the G01 BMW X3 will bring an updated design language along with a new platform which will make the compact SUV sportier and more attractive to buyers. Based on the latest spy photos, the folks at AutoBild Germany have put together a new rendering highlighting the main features of the new X3.

The G01 X3 seen here features more aggressive and sporty lines around the front fascia, more angular shapes and a new design of the headlights. Instead of the headlights previously seen in rendering which all ended in the outer edge of the kidney grille, this new image shows headlights which are closer in form and shape to the new M2 and well embedded within the 3D-shapped around around the grille. Our sources say the front design was adjusted due to the new pedestrian safety regulations and now sits a little straighter than before.

The rear quarter is not shown here, but we expect to see a slightly lower roofline than the current model and the one-piece tailgate.

BMW’s new rear-wheel drive flexible modular system will offer increased interior space and a redesigned seating system to ensure higher variability and greater comfort.

Thanks to the use of lightweight materials, the G01 X3 will be about 100 kg lighter than the F25 X3, which will translate into better driving dynamics and more efficient driving. For the first time, BMW will offer an extended wheelbase for the X3, likely catering to markets like China.

To compete with the Audi RS Q5 and Mercedes GLC 55 AMG, BMW is allegedly planning an X3 M based on the next generation midsize SUV. The true M variant would be powered by a 3.0 liter inline-six turbocharged engine delivering close to 500 horsepower. An X3 M40i is also launching and was recently spied.

BMW will unveil the G01 X3 early next year.
