The Chevy Camaro recently took the American car world by storm, winning Motor Trend’s coveted Car of the Year award. It caught quite a lot of people off guard when it debuted, as the previous generation Chevy Camaro was a pig and that’s being kind. However, this new generation is supposed to be quite good. But is it BMW M4 good?
Motor Trend intended to find out and it’s actually a comparison that makes sense on paper. Both have somewhat similar power figures, with the BMW M4 making 425 hp and the Camaro making 455 hp. The Camaro has more torque as well, with an even 455 lb-ft while the M4 has 406 lb-ft.
However, both cars make their power in very different ways, as the Camaro SS uses a big, burly 6.2 liter V8 while the BMW M4 uses a smaller, twin-turbocharged 3.0 liter I6. But despite their differences, both cars have very similar performance figures, with the manual-equipped M4 getting from 0-60 mph in 4.2 seconds while the Camaro does the same sprint in 4.1. Although, the BMW M4 did lap the Streets of Willow about a second faster than the Camaro SS.
In terms of handling and braking, Motor Trend found mixed results. The BMW M4 had far superior brakes, despite a longer 60-0 mph braking distance. But they felt that the pedal feel and actual braking performance of the M4 was much better than the Camaro’s. However, they also felt the Camaro to be the better handling car. They felt the Camaro’s steering was better, as was its shifter. They also preferred the Camaro’s engine noise better, which is something that many people actually complain about for the M4, as it isn’t as good as previous M cars and some of it is artificial.
We haven’t driven the new Camaro SS, so we can’t say whether it’s the better driving car or not. All we can say for sure is that the two cars perform very similarly. Both are equally as fast and both seem to be very fun to drive. Motor Trend did say that the BMW M4 looked much better, and we’d have to agree, but looks are subjective. So it would really have to come down to driving the two back to back to see which is better and which deserves your money.
