This BMW M1 was recently listed for sale on eBay and according to the seller this car was the first very M1 ever built. The listing says this is the first BMW M1 prototype Lamborghini produced before the short production series M1 hit the streets. The seller also claims that this M1 prototype was built by Lamborghini before BMW jumped in and took over the project. The car was later converted to racing duty for the 1979 season of the Procar BMW M1 Championship.

According to the seller, the car needs a complete restoration – engine, transmission, suspension, among many other things. The M1 has been kept in a dry barn for the last 30 years and it has 1000 miles on the odometer.

The body was designed by Giugiaro, taking inspiration from the 1972 BMW Turbo show car. At the time of its launch, it was one of the fastest and most dynamic cars on the market. It featured a 277 horsepower 3.5-liter straight-six engine and could reach speeds in excess of 160 mph. The redline came at 7,000 rpm and the M1 was capable of accelerating from 0-62 mph in 5.6 seconds.
