Just days after first spy photos of the upcoming BMW X2 surfaced on the interwebs, rendering artists got back to work peeling off every piece of camouflage tape to recreate – virtually – what the final design could look like.
There’s much debate as to whether or not BMW should create the X2, as enthusiasts bemoan the dilution of the BMW brand because of cars like the X2. However, you cannot deny the massive sales potential of the X2.
Being based on the X1, there’s not much else BMW has to change to create an X2 and it will sell like crazy, especially in North America where small coupe-like crossovers are incredibly popular. So it should be a great money-maker for BMW.
It will also be more of a coupe-styled crossover like the X4 and will be based on the same UKL platform as the X1.
It certainly shares some similarities with the X1, but looks a bit sportier in profile. It almost has a sort of “big hot hatch” look to it, much like the Mercedes-Benz GLA Class, a car that is actually cooler than it seems. The F39 X2 will separate itself from the X1 by having a higher rear belt line and smaller rear window as well as a more aggressively swept roofline.
Priced accordingly, this X2 SUV will bring new customers to the brand and tap into the millennials generation. Exactly what BMW is betting on currently with the M2 and X1.
The small SUV is slotted to launch in 2018 and will see fierce competition from the Range Rover Evoque and future Audis and Benzs.
