Latest online chatter point to the launch of a new BMW series car in 2019. According to sources, BMW is designing the 2 Series Gran Coupe – a compact four-door coupe – upon the 2 Series platform. The BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe is said to be a rear-wheel drive four-door coupe as a competitor to the Mercedes-Benz CLA.
According to German media, BMW’s Chief Development Officer, Klaus Fröhlich, is advocating for the rear-wheel drive Gran Coupe to join the coupe and convertible. Autobild speculates on the engine offerings as well; the 2 Series Gran Coupe is said to make use of three and four-cylinder engines, while a top-model is being considered by the M division.
The exterior design is based on the 2 Series Coupe and Convertible models, but with a slightly longer platform to accommodate the sleek roof line and increased size. The 2 Series Gran Coupe will sport short overhangs at the front and a rear-end with a coupe-like profile all around. Because of the stretch to accommodate a slightly lengthened platform, the elongated roofline is lower, more rounded. The front-end is shaped up after the next BMW design language which will debut alongside the new X3 in 2017.
It still remains unknown whether BMW will build the 2er Gran Coupe on the current 2 Series architecture or the second-generation one due out in 2021.
