We all know the BMW X2 is coming. BMW’s next small crossover will arrive in 2018 and will fill the spot between the X1 and X3, obviously, in the same vein as the BMW X4. It will also be more of a coupe-styled crossover like the X4 and will be based on the same UKL Platform as the X1.

There’s much debate as to whether or not BMW should create the X2, as enthusiasts bemoan the dilution of the BMW brand because of cars like the X2. However, you cannot deny the massive sales potential of the X2. Being based on the X1, there’s not much else BMW has to change to create an X2 and it will sell like crazy, especially in North America where small coupe-like crossovers are incredibly popular. So it should be a great money-maker for BMW.

Some new spy shots of the X2 have recently surfaced and it actually looks pretty good. It certainly shares some similarities with the X1, but looks a bit sportier in profile. It almost has a sort of “big hot hatch” look to it, much like the Mercedes-Benz GLA Class, a car that is actually cooler than it seems. So this X2 might actually be a fun and quirky-looking little car.

The X2 will separate itself from the X1 by having a higher rear belt line and smaller rear window as well as a more aggressively swept roofline. Otherwise, it does look striking similar to its younger brother, which isn’t surprising considering it shared platform.

The BMW X2 will come with xDrive all-wheel drive as standard in the US, but will be available with front-wheel drive as well everywhere else. It’s likely that the X2 will have a slew of turbo three and four-cylinder engines, both petrol and diesel, worldwide, but the only engine coming ‘Stateside will likely be the same B48 2.0 liter engine in the X1.

With its fun-to-drive X1 platform, likely lighter weight than the X1 and sportier looks, the X2 should actually be a very fun addition to the BMW SUV lineup. The BMW X1 is already a really fun little crossover to drive and probably best-in-class, but the X2 to could be the go-to in the segment when it debuts.
