The head of Mercedes-Benz parent Daimler said recently that he sees the three larger German automakers, BMW, Daimler and Volkswagen, working together on battery packs for electric vehicles.

Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche talked about “commonalities” between automakers; all three have launched several plug-in vehicles go with more electric vehicles to follow. The big three currently share the Nokia Here mapping service.

“Nokia here led to a common approach… and there might be other areas,” Zetsche told a news conference at the Frankfurt auto show, adding that any such cooperation would most likely start with the next generation of batteries.
