BMW CEO Harald Krueger told Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung that in the current “i” lineup there is room for more electric models.

“Between the i3 and the i8, there is space if you look at it from the number point of view,” said Krueger. He added that he could not give any more details at present.

A BMW i5 model has been rumored for quite some time now with the body style taking the shape of a sedan or crossover-like electric car. Dubbed as a Tesla Model S fighter, the i5 is allegedly being built with two drivetrains: electric-only and plug-in hybrid.

Late last week various news outlets reported that BMW and Apple were previously discussing partnering on electric vehicles. Krueger also touched on the subject saying that the two companies are often in contact regarding connected cars technology.

BMW is due to report first-half results on Tuesday when we will learn more about the electric vehicles sales.

Krüger gives us another wonderfully ambiguous statement about plans for BMW i’s future lineup. The translations from the original German obviously don’t help. My version: There may yet be a place for another i model between the i3 and the i8, from a purely numerical perspective. But the i3 and i8 are in completely different segments, so what does numerical mean— simply between “3” and “8”? Let me guess — “5”?

The post’s first sentence probably gives the best interpretation of Krüger’s statement: There’s room for more electric models. Really? The recent tea leaves say BMW won’t make a decision until the end of the year, so even Krüger doesn’t know what the next i model will be.

The i5 render in the post looks very much like the render of the future Tesla Model 3, which looks like a smaller Model S. But Elon Musk has said the Model 3 will not look like the Model S (or any other car). And the most recent rumors point to the i5 being a Model X competitor — a large SUV.

I think you are very Wrong in that rendering… I8 was designed in the spirit of the Old M1, and are brilliant in view.. and the I3 is a concept city car, and seem to have done that right to, except of the design.. I do think the Next hybrid car from BMW would look like the normal 2,3,4,5,6 serie. new you can see the brand new 7 serie, has a 740Le witch is soon on the way.. : http://www.bmw.de/de/neufahrzeuge/7er/limousine/2015/bmw-edrive.html
