Rowan Atkinson has recently sold his McLaren F1 for £8million, yet he was just spotted in the £30,000 BMW i3 electric car.
The comedian was spotted in London driving an Arravani Grey i3 which can only go up to 95mph compared to the F1 which reaches a thrilling 240mph. The i3 is not only the more economical car, but also less expensive to maintain. The annual cost to insure his F1, which he once crashed into a tree in 2011, was said to be around £60,000, in contrast with the i3 which costs a few thousand pounds to insure.
On top of this, his BMW i3 is so cost effective that it is even exempt from the £11.50-a-day London Congestion Zone charge because it is considered so environmentally friendly.
Atkinson owns an impressive collection that includes a Honda NSX, a Jaguar Mk7, an Aston Martin DB2, a vintage Ford Falcon, a 1939 BMW 328 and a Rolls-Royce Phantom Coupe.
BMW offers a fully electric i3 BEV and an i3 REx for those worried about driving range. BMW i3 REx comes with a rear-mounted 650cc, 34 hp, two-cylinder, gasoline- powered Range Extender generator is available, which roughly doubles the vehicle’s range. When the battery gets to a certain level, the Range Extender starts and maintains the battery’s current state of charge.
The 170 hp electric motor and one speed transmission are good for a 0-60 second time of 7.0 seconds and a top speed of 93 mph. The i3 Range Extender with its 1.9 gallon tank for the on board gas electric generator provides 120-185 miles.
