After a couple of years of uncertainty, BMW’s X2 has received the green light for production in 2017.

Rumors of a BMW X2 model first came to life in 2014. The X2 Sports Activity Coupe was planned to be slotted between the X1 SAC and the new X4 four-door crossover. There weren’t any test mules spotted or any official information, aside from BMW registering the trademark for the X2 name. Earlier this year, a source close to brand told BMWBLOG that the original X2 might not reach the production lines at least not in the form we expected. The F47 X2 is allegedly going to be replaced by another rumored model, the XCite, which might still carry the X2 name. Basically we were told that the X2’s design is being scrapped and new sketches are in works for the XCite model.

BMW’s X2 will be built on the X1 front-wheel drive platform and will follow the example of the larger X4 and X6 in receiving a uniquely styled steel body. It will feature a five-door layout, with its tailgate set at a more extreme angle than that of the more practical X1 to give it a coupe-like silhouette. The interior is expected to be largely shared with the new X1.

BMW X2 is planned to be sold exclusively with three-cylinder and four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines, along with the choice of either front-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. They will be mated to either a six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic gearbox in combination with front or four-wheel drive.

The X2 will be produced alongside the new X1 at BMW’s Regensburg factory in Germany.

The rendering above attempts to illustrate what the X2 design might look like and it’s no indication that the final product will resemble this.
