Another BMW M2 test mule was spotted out in the wild, this time near the Leipzig plant in Germany. A reader of BMWBLOG, N.J., got upclose with the new M2 and took some photos of the camouflaged car, including some car undercarrriage photos. Unfortunately the cabin was masked off as well, so we couldn’t get a close look at the rumored M4-like seats and the steering wheel. The photographer said the following: “The car is apparently built for US-market. Has a lower stance and wider body, compared to M235i and more aggressive front grille, with protruding lower splitter.”
A video of the exhaust sound is included below. Judging by the plethora of M2 spy photos, an unveil is not that far off, with a likely public debut this Fall.
Our sources say that the M limited-slip differential on the rear axle is also adopted almost unchanged from the M3/M4, giving the M2 unrivaled dynamics in its class. The M2 uses an updated N55 engine with 365 hp and 343 lb-ft of torque with 25 lb-ft of torque available as overboost. While the updated N55 is based on the same engine found in the M235i, our source says it will have some components from the new S55 unit. Yet the engine code will still be labeled as N55. The engine will feature an overboost function just like the 1M, good for 25 lb-ft of torque.
