BMW has brought a large fleet of M2 prototypes to the US. Judging by the latest flow of M2 photos on social media, Reddit and online forums, California is the lucky host of these test mules before the official unveil this Fall. The M2 shows up in Alpine White, Black Sapphire and Mineral Grey colors, three out of four colors planned at launch time – Long Beach Blue is the other one.
The Black Sapphire M2 mule sports a sunroof, so it confirms our initial report: no carbon fiber planned. Even though the M4 can be ordered with or without the CF roof. Also the fuel tank cover is round and not square like on the M235i and the 19 inch wheels are nearly identical with the ones found on the M4 Coupe.
The 2016 BMW M2 uses the chassis technology, largely unadjusted, of the current M3 and M4, associated with the unique in its class weight distribution of 50 to 50 between the two axles. The M limited-slip differential on the rear axle is also adopted almost unchanged from the M3/M4, giving the M2 unrivaled dynamics in its class.
The M2 uses an updated N55 engine with 365 hp and 343 lb-ft of torque with 25 lb-ft of torque available as overboost. While the updated N55 is based on the same engine found in the M235i, our source says it will have some components from the new S55 unit. Yet the engine code will still be labeled as N55. The engine will feature an overboost function just like the 1M, good for 25 lb-ft of torque.
Production kicks off in November with first units delivered to customers in early 2016.
