If you frequent this site, it’s more than likely that you’re a car enthusiast. If you’re a car enthusiast, it’s more than likely that you were a fan of the recently cancelled motoring program, Top Gear.
We won’t get into why Top Gear is no longer being televised, but while it was around it was the best car show…in the world. And if you’re a fan of the show, you’d be interested to know that Richard Hammond’s E36 M3 Evo from the Sport Saloon Challenge episode just sold at auction for £5,830.
As part Top Gear, the three presenters, Jeremy, Richard and James, got into all sorts of hijinks with older cars. They’d be given a challenge of some sorts where they would have to buy an old sports car or off-roading SUV for a ludicrously low price, to insure the cars would give them issues along their journeys. In one of these challenges, the presenters were each tasked with buying old sports saloon cars for under £5,000. One of the cars bought, by Richard Hammond, was an E36 M3 Evo 4dr Saloon.
This particular M3 was the fastest car of the three chosen and beat out James’ Mercedes 190E 2.3 Cosworth and Jeremy’s Ford Sierra Cosworth. It proved to be the best sports car of the three, but when inspected by a German technician, was deemed very unsafe and mechanically unsound. It seems that it was in a bad accident at some point in its life and was never repaired that well. Despite that, this M3 was a very entertaining part of this episode and held up despite the punishment it was given, proving the toughness of the E36 BMW.
So some lucky fan has walked away with not only a very good car, even if it isn’t in the best of shape, but one that has some television pedigree. This car was part of one of the more entertaining adventures on Top Gear. It actually got to be driven by Richard Hammond and, more importantly, The Stig. Maybe I’m just nerding out right now, but any car that was driven by The Stig is a car that I want to drive and own. Despite the fact that a German technician said it might kill me.
