According to German outlet Auto Motor und Sport, BMW is planning a new derivative of the 2 Series Coupe. The BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe is said to be a rear-wheel drive four-door coupe which might arrive in 2018 as a competitor to the Mercedes-Benz CLA.
The Germans journalists mentioned that BMW’s Chief Development Officer, Klaus Fröhlich, is advocating for the rear-wheel drive Gran Coupe to join the coupe and convertible. The car not only speaks to the customers’ needs, but also to the economies of scale because the rear-wheel drive architecture is shared with the future 3, 5 and 7, each with different wheelbase and track width.
First rumors around the 2 Series Gran Coupe appeared in 2015 when the typical BMW insider “predicted” the compact four-door coupe would arrive in 2015. At the time, the BMW whistleblower said the exterior design is based on the 2 Series Coupe and Convertible models, but with a slightly longer platform to accommodate the sleek roof line and increased size. The 2 Series Gran Coupe was said to sport short overhangs at the front and rear with a coupe-like profile all around. Because of the stretch to accommodate a slightly lengthened platform, the elongated roofline is lower, more rounded.
If the 2018 is the scheduled launch date, then the first prototypes should hit the road next year.
