A bit ahead of its time, but here is one of the first renderings of the next generation BMW M5. Due out in 2018, the F90 M5 is likely to be the first M car to be offered with an optional all-wheel drive system. Franciscus van Meel, BMW M CEO, recently said that if the sports division will use an xDrive in the next M5 and M6, it will not be as a full-time 50/50 split. He suggested that it will act like the current xDrive system does now, with 100% of power going to the rear and only sending some to the front to increase grip as needed.

Design wise, the F90 M5 will probably take advantage of the new BMW design language, with a more aggressive front fascia, 3D sculpted kidney grille and sleeker LED headlights connecting to the outer edge of the grille. In the rear, the OLED taillights previewed earlier this year might be offered as well. The renderings below use the current F10 M5 as the starting point and adding some design cues from the new M3/M4.

We expect to see the same 4.4 liter V8 turbocharged under the hood, but now developing 600 horsepower, just like the M5 “30 Jahre Edition.”

Just like the upcoming G30 5 Series, the M5 will be a lighter car, BMW has learned a lot from BMW i and CFRP and aluminum components will be at the core at all future models, not just the F90 M5. The platform of the G30 5 Series mixes high-strength steel, aluminum and carbon fiber to drop around 80kg from today’s 5-series, so it’s not unrealistic to expect a similar weight drop in the new M5.

The F90 M5 will be launched in 2018, followed a year later by the M6.
