BMW is getting serious about bringing to market a small SUV to sit below the new X1. Dubbed BMW Xcite or 1 Series Sport Cross or Urban Cross (the final name has yet to be decided, but the X0 is being ruled out), the small SUV is rumored to be built atop the 2 Series Active Tourer platform and to sell for around 25,000 Euros.

The new SUV will also compete against the SUV variants of the subsidiary MINI and against the planned Audi Q1, coming in 2016, one year before the BMW model.

The new city SUV is optically smaller X1 and clearly distinct from the X models. The design could feature a compact greenhouse on top of a muscular body; a wide stance; a long nose, long roof, and wide track; and an edgy mix of M Sport and X-line styling elements. The of use space and good visibility are the main requirements when building this new SUV. The trunk volume is said to be at the level of a MINI Paceman – 330 liters.

BMW Urban Cross shares its front-wheel drive architecture with the new MINI and it will include the known three- and four-cylinder engines. An electric version is said to not be in the plan, but a hybrid version might follow at a later stage.

BMW also aims to compete in this quirky segment with the Citroën C4 Cactus and the Nissan Juke.

At this point BMW would be serious about a smartcar competitor…

I’ve always been a bimmer fan, had a 328 E90, now got a 328 E90 LCI. E90 M3 is what I’m working towards now. After that I think I’m definitely ditching the brand. There’s used to be exclusivity with BMW but not any more.

It’s obviously good for the company, they do have their job of brand growth. Now they just seem like a higher end VW. What pissed me off more than anything were the M sport packages. //M models should stand out, now you can’t tell the difference from far away if the car is an M or has a m sport pkg.

you are ditching it because you feel like missing exclusivity? i would ditch a brand if it lacks quality, not exclusivity. i feel you have a very sad way of thinking.

That’s a pretty good looking cute-ute above. Even if BMW makes it, I would be surprised if the company brings it to the States.

For me a competitor for RR-Evoque. A successful suv.

Just because we are hearing about it again doesn’t mean that they are ‘serious’ about making this rumor a reality. This is a design proposal at this stage that hasn’t been green-lighted for production, so let’s not get ahead of ourselves.

looks nice. but smaller than X1? in reality i fear it will be disappointing. but on these photos it looks good.
