Auto Express publishes a comparative test drive between three hatchbacks that compete for similar customers. The BMW 1 Series hatch is matched against a Mazda 3 and an Audi A3 – two vehicles from the premium class and an affordable hatch.
A new competitor in the market, the Mazda 3 is certainly making waves with customers looking for the best bang for the buck.
Out of the three, only the Audi A3 and the Mazda 3 are available in the United States, while the 1 Series Hatchback remains an European-affair only.
For this test, the UK magazine used the Audi A3 1.6 TDI SE priced at £21,445, the BMW 116D SE at £21,360 and the Mazda 3 2.2 SKYACTIV-D SEL with a base price of £21,145.
“The Mazda’s power advantage is made clear in our drag race, where it trounced the slower Audi and BMW. This isn’t to the detriment of fuel economy, though: the BMW achieves a claimed 68.9mpg and 109g/km of CO2, the Mazda a very similar 68.9g/km and 107g/km and the Audi manages 74.2mpg and 99g/km of CO2 – the cleanest car here.” – Auto Express Road Test
