The interwebs are debating, speculating and mulling over a BMW test mule which was spotted earlier today. A quick look at the test mule and one would assume this is just a regular 2 Series Coupe, but a closer inspection reveals a shorter wheelbase, a lowered roof and a smaller windscreen.
All these point out to a different chassis and platform underneath the body panels. The prototype also has its roof, hood and rear spoiler made of carbon fiber. We’re clearly looking at a lightweight vehicle with a coupe shape and a hard top. Can someone say Roadster?
So with these facts under their belt and the added speculation by the typical BMW whistleblower, Scott26/27, the BMW community is pointing to the new BMW Z3 or Z5 that we first reported on a few days ago.
Sources say the new BMW Z3 will keep a very interesting balance between “sustainability” and sportsmanship. Two variants are also rumored: Coupe and Roadster. This model will fulfill all the requirements we have in our mind when we think of a BMW Roadster.
The future Z3 is characterized by a very low weight and will feature three-, four- and six-cylinder engines, designed to rival the Porsche Boxster and Cayman.
On the other hand, same sources say the BMW Z5 will look terrific, following the classic roadster proportions, a huge hood, very elongated headlamps attached to the front kidneys to form the new visual identity of the Z models.
Regardless of what’s being tested, the company certainly doesn’t want us to know about it hence the extensive bodywork to hide the actual product.
