The long-time rumored BMW 1 Series Sedan was spotted for the first time.

The BMW 1 Series Sedan is built internally under the name NES (New Entry-Level Sedan) and it makes use of the upcoming front-wheel drive architecture which will be used in many models by BMW, including the new 2 Series Active Tourer and second generation X1.

The NES is described as being in the strategic planning stage, in which designers and engineers are asked to lay down preliminary guidelines for the new model. Chassis designation is F52.

BMW and its 1 Series Sedan will enter a premium market along with the Mercedes-Benz CLA and Audi A3 Sedan, both vehicles that also use a front-wheel drive setup. Like the competition, the new BMW model has been developed to support fwd and four-wheel drive.

As seen here, the overall proportions are smaller than the F30 3 Series with a short but high boot. The camouflage has yet to reveal the design lines but as the prototypes advance in their testing process, we expect to slowly see what’s hidden underneath.

Under the hood, the 1 Series Sedan will carry either three- and four-cylinder inline direct-injection petrol and common-rail diesel units.

The 1 Series Sedan might head to the U.S. by 2017.

Given the camo, it’s hard to get too excited. Proportions looks acceptable… at least seeing it on the road means that development is progressing!

2-3 more years is too long, they need this car out yesterday.

Other blogs are saying possibly late 2015 or 2016 (as 2017 model).

They always come out a year before the actual production. I would say summer 2016 as model year 2017

    Size-wise, it’s the 3-Series from yesteryear.
