The high-tech futuristic hybrid BMW i8 goes up against the more traditional Porsche 911 Carrera S. Which will win?

The “base model,” known as the 911 Carrera, is fitted with a 3.8-liter flat-six that produces 400 hp @ 7,400 rpm and 325 lb-ft @ 5,600 rpm Output is sent to the rear wheels via either a seven-speed manual or the PDK seven-speed dual-clutch automatic.

0 to 60 mph is rated at 4.2 seconds.

BMW i8 uses a plug-in hybrid system consisting of a turbocharged three-cylinder BMW TwinPower Turbo petrol engine and BMW eDrive technology in the form of an electric drive system. The 1.5-liter combustion engine develops 170 kW/231 hp and drives the rear wheels of the BMW i8, while the 96 kW/131 hp electric drive sends its power to the front wheels and allows an all-electric range of up to 35 kilometers (22 miles) and a top speed of 120 km/h (75 mph).

After seeing the i8 in person, I’d take the Porsche. Being over six feet tall, trying to get in the i8 is just stupid, approaching the car the gullwing door was right in my face. Then getting over the sill is a challenge, much like getting into a Lotus Elise. Plus the rear seats, and trunk are ridiculously small to the point that they’re almost useless. I’ve owned several Porsches, and they are comfortable and easy to live with on a daily basis.
