This car takes one of the top spots in all around best BMW’s ever produced. Not only was this model one of the biggest sellers for BMW with 561,249 vehicles sold in just 2002 alone. This model came in two door coupe, convertible, sedan, touring and compact versions. In 2001 the M version of this car was offered as a two door coupe and convertible and had a limited slip differential, larger more powerful engine, and a sportier suspension.
This car won numerous titles in its tenure, and as a model the 3 series has won the Car and Driver: 10 Best a record 22 times and is only succeeded by the Honda Accord. From 2003 to 2006 the BMW E46 took home multiple first place trophies in races such as Danish Touringcar Championship, World Touring Car Championship, Italian Superturismo Championship, and the Asian Touring Car Championship.
Competition in the small sedan market was tough as the rivals of the BMW E46 were also popular. Cars like Acura TL, Alfa Romeo 156, Audi A4, Lexus IS, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, and the Volvo S40 were always clamoring to keep with the sales of the E46.
This is my favorite BMW and is the model I currently drive (04’ 325Xi) which I have to say has an amazing all-wheel drive system that has kept me safe and sound in a couple of treacherous situations.
