The idea of a BMW X1 M or M Performance Automobile model has been circulation for years on the interwebs but each time BMW has denied that a performance version of the entry-level SUV will come to market.
According to CarAdvice citing BMW M performance arm sales boss, Jörg Bartels, the performance division is constantly looking across the model range to see which vehicles fit their strategy.
“I will say again what the boss of BMW M has stated in the past – all BMWs are eligible for an M model,” he said. “We will see how Audi and Mercedes go with that,” Bartels said of the launch of the compact performance SUV.
It’s unclear if Bartels made a reference to a full-M X1 model or an X1 M Performance Automobile, similar to other models.
A performance version of the X1 would compete directly with the Audi RS Q3 and Mercedes-Benz GLA45 AMG. X5 and X6.
The timing might be off though. The second-generation X1 will be out in 2015 and on top of this, the new model goes front-wheel drive.
