Out of nowhere and somewhat surprising, the BMW i3M or M i3, whichever name will carry, was spotted with the typical psychedelic camouflage during testing sessions.
Tom Moloughney, one of the biggest electronauts, and a well connected BMW insider, says the following: “I finally got a chance to look at a pre-production ///M i3 last week. The car I saw didn’t have all the body work or the special wheels that the ///M i3 pictured above has since this one is being used for internal testing here at BMW’s North American headquarters, but it did have all the performance upgrades and ///M badging.”
Sources say that not only the i3 will get the ///M treatment but also the upcoming i8 super hybrid. BMW seems to want to live up to the Ultimate Driving Machine slogan and has decided to produce an //M electric vehicle.
Other insiders say the super electric M car will use the same motor as the base i3 but modified to increase power output by about 25%. If that holds true, figure on about 210 horsepower and 230 lb-ft of torque. Built under the lightweight philosophy, the i3M should now run to 62 mph in about 5.5 seconds.
The suspension will obviously be improved for performance and the interior will likely get the usual smattering of ///M badging and special seats which offer more support.
All we can say is that we applaud the change in strategy and we are looking forward to get the best M ever built with the highest efficiency ever.
Who’s in for one?
