Update: Looking closer at the video, the prototype might be the upcoming BMW X6 M. This shows how close, as far as design, the two Sports Activity Coupes are.

Yesterday we posted a video of the new F80 BMW M3 testing at Nurburgring and while the video was quite entertaining, we ended up missing an important part of it.

The footage also featured, what seemed to be, a high-powered BMW X4 doing some power laps as well. As the video shows, the X4 prototype carries four tailpipes and differs significantly from the previously presented X4 variants. Even the 300-hp xDrive35i and xDrive35d top models “only” feature two tailpipes on the left, opening the door for speculations.

Unofficially, BMW mentioned in the past that no X4 M model is being planned, and as always we take those comments with a grain of salt. But the video below indicates that while a full-blown M model is out of the question, an M Performance Automobile might be the answer.

Dubbed BMW X4 M40i, the this M Performance model would be positioned above the X4 xDrive35i and appeal to especially to customers looking for extra sportiness in their X4 Sports Activity Coupe.

With around 350-hp from a six-cylinder turbo engine, the BMW X4 M40i could be a worthy opponent for the new Porsche Turbo Macan which produces 400 hp.

Here is the footage from Nurburgring:
