The launch of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe has left many wondered if BMW will follow suit with a similar model. Just last year BMW previewed a concept car, the Gran Lusso, which in essence could compete with the beautiful and elegant S-Class Coupe.
So is BMW working on a 8 Series model based on the Gran Lusso? Just last year new rumors surfaced indicating that a new, elegant and sporty 8 Series Coupe is on the drawing table in Munich. BMW insiders told Automotive News that the company is weighing a return to the high-end coupe segment. “We want to send out the message the future is not all about electric cars but also traditional models with real emotional appeal,” said a BMW source.
Other BMW sources hint that the BMW Pininfarina Gran Lusso Coupe revealed at the 2013 Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este is a conceptual version of the future 8 Series. The spacious and bigger coupe than BMW’s current 6 series is the first project the Italian design house Pininfarina has done with BMW.
By using the high-tech G11/G12 platform of the upcoming 7 Series, the 8 Series Coupe would be the Munich’s flagship and its first foray into this niche segment.
But what would the 8 Series Coupe look like? The folks over at xtomi have put together an interesting rendering.
