Legendary Formula 1 driver and multiple champion Michael Schumacher is in coma after a ski accident.
The 44-year-old German suffered a blow to the head after hitting a rock at the upmarket Alps resort of Meribel. Initial reports suggested the injuries were not life-threatening, but a brain hemorrhage required surgery and induced come. He is now listed as in critical condition.
The Meribel resort director, Christophe Gernigon-Lecomte, said Schumacher was skiing off-piste late Sunday morning with companions when he fell and struck his head. Reports says he was wearing a helmet as well.
Experts say it is likely that his brain began to swell and the urgent surgery was required to relieve the pressure, BBC reports.
