BMW sent out a press release regarding ongoing research into connecting the vehicle to the real world. They are exploring making the vehicle more aware of its surroundings, in particular potential hazards (people, for example) and traffic.

To do this requires processing power in the vehicle that only a few years ago would have been impossible. One key is the speed of the processing bus (think of a local area network cable) and its ability to gather information from various vehicle systems. The vehcile has to integrate the systems, deal with interrupts (in particular prioritize them) and send the appropriate signals back to the appropriate system, ABS, throttle, EPS, which can then initiate electro-mechanical action.

Interconnected Safety, the Future of Travel
These are the systems that will be required to function flawlessly for ubiquitous driverless automobiles.
