The new BMW 2 Series Convertible was spied while testing hard at the Nurburgring track.
Coming to market in 2014, the BMW 2 Series will be offered, initially, in a coupe (F22) and convertible (F23) format. BMW will offer the convertible with the classic fabric soft top, with the hardtop remaining exclusive to the Z4 Roadster and 4 Series Convertible.
The test mule during some hot laps on the famous track continues to sport a heavy camouflage that hide the final details of the design. Judging by the engine sound, we might be looking at a 235i or M235i model which features under the hood a 3.0 liter inline-six turbocharged engine.
The U.S. market will most likely get the 228i and 235i or M235i Convertibles, while the European market will see a wide range of offerings: 220i, 225i, 218d, 220d and 225d. The 2 Series vehicles will be driven by a rear-wheel drive architecture, but it remains unknown if the 2 Series cabrio will get the xDrive system.
By positioning the new coupe and convertible as 2 Series products, BMW will be able to sell them at a premium price while including some of the options featured in higher-end models.
The 2 Series coupe and convertible will make their debut later this year.
