Steve Sutcliffe of Autocar gives us the biggest hot hatch shootout of the year. The UK folks review the BMW M135i against the Mercedes A45 AMG and Volkswagen Golf GTI.

The entry level hot hatch, in terms of price and performance, is the new VW Golf 7 GTI that comes with an optional performance package and sells for 29,825 euros in Europe. The 230 horsepower are sent to the front wheels. If you can live with 220 hp and without differential lock at the front, the GTI gets even cheaper.

The BMW M135i is available with rear-wheel drive and xDrive configuration, but the standard RWD version starts at 39,850 euro and unfortunately it is not offered to U.S. customers. It produces 320 horsepower and we had a blast driving it from Munich to Geneva back in March.

The M135i is known to strongly focus on residual comfort and everyday practicality.

The Mercedes A45 AMG comes with an all-wheel drive setup and by far it has the highest price for its 360 hp: 49,682 euros.

So how do the cars stack against each other?

  • Patrick II

A 2.0 liter Merc turns the 3 litre BMW to dust. One more testament to who makes the best cars in the world!

    • realtrevor

And an AMG Car vs a non M Car. What do you expect?

      • Patrick II

A 2-liter engine vs a 3-litre engine with equal hp. That’s what I mean. Merc rules. BMW sucks as always!

        • Patrick? C’mon man

          BMW 2013 M5 4.4L @ 560bph
          2012 Merc E63 AMG 5.5L @ 518bph
Can you please explain this and how this applies to “BMW sucks as always”?

          • rustyminded

merc. won 2 times in engine awards, bmw took engine award on every single engine they produce. cheers

        • rustyminded

besides wait for the new 1M or M2 as they say it will be based on the N20 which is the best 2 liter in the market and that gets us to the point where the merc. has 360 hp and 450 nm only my car is 2 liter n20 tuned 350 hp and 550 NM from NONE-M engine now you can guess who’s best not better.

It’s a good car but you have to like good driving. Check this vid: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2xwecTp91-o

So, last year the M135i was great, almost as good as the 1M. Funny how it got worse over such a short space of time… that even a GTi beats it. Pathetic = Sutcliffe.

Yeah, I find it strange since even Clarkson praised the little hatch.

  • BMW E28

One of the worst comparisons I have ever seen, this guy dont know anything about cars so I’m not even gonna try to explain why BMW is the best car in its class, its common sense. I’m sick of all this crappy journalists.

  • Ray Afzal

this guy has no clue…he went in with a favourite and left with a favourite..made the bmw sound rubbish, putting it down to a 60hp less golf is ridiculous, he didnt ebven hav a reason. sort ur reviews out mate

  • digivue

I really dig GTI, but it has one flaw – wrong wheel drive. Event R32 version with BS Haldex can’t fix that. :( I find its interior the most compelling and exterior second best after MB. MB’s interior is second in my mind. Bimmer’s exterior is the ugliest in my opinion. Also, I am not sure about M badge as I’d assume they use eLSD (yuck!) and appearance items only.

  • FRED

everybody knows this guy is antiBMW…

  • Michael

    2 things.
    1. The BMW wins hands down.
    2. Get the VW out of a premium-hatch comparison.

  • Pascal

How on earth can you say that the steering of this BMW is not ok?? Perhaps it is your very poor and amateuristic driving skills. It has the most precise and sporty handling a car in this segment can have; great direct response, accurate and it gives very good feedback. Looks like Mr. Sutcliffe is just anti-BMW. And mind you, I appreciate a good and honest review with good and substantiated criticism, but sorry, this absolutely is not.

  • zumit

Haha…. A non-M car is damn close to a AMG…well that says it all… BMW bring on the M please.

    • digivue

Second on bringing a true M car. Also, fix that ugly front and stop putting \M badge everywhere just dilutes division’s reputation.

  • fredyschiftan@aol.com

you can see its a copy of the BMW , the back is identical , lets wait for BMW to perfect the M135 . Mercedes is SOOO ugly and cheap looking ,,,,,

  • gonzo
