With the backing of Tata, British automaker Jaguar is ready to take on BMW’s highest selling model, the 3 Series. A Jaguar source told AutoExpress that the development of the midsize luxury car is still on track, along with a nine-speed automatic transmission.
“Look at the 2.2-litre diesel and look at engines like the new 2.0-litre turbo [petrol] and you can see we’ve got the powertrain platform already for a smaller car,” said the source to the UK magazine.
The smaller, yet premium Jaguar will sit below the XF models and will be offered in both rear and all-wheel-drive configuration, similar to the XF and XJ models.
Both a sedan and Sportbrake estate bodystyles will be built atop this architecture.
