On the latest episode of MotorTrend’ Head 2 Head Jonny Lieberman finds out which plus size super sedan is king of the hill. Can the rear-wheel drive BMW Alpina B7 take on the Quattro all-wheel drive of Audi’s S8?

The 2013 ALPINA B7 produces 540 horsepower, 40 more than the outgoing model. On top of this, the B7 gets 22 lb-ft more torque (up to 538 from 516 lb-ft) thanks to the addition of BMW’s Valvetronic throttle-less intake technology and a new ALPINA 8-speed high performance transmission. Top speed is extended to 194 mph (drag-limited, 193 mph with xDrive), up from the previous 175 mph. Acceleration drops into the low-mid-4-second range for all variants (4.3-4.4 seconds).

Audi’s S8 comes equipped with a 4.0 liter V-8 force-fed by two IHI turbochargers. This powerplant produces 520 horsepower and 479 lb-ft, available from 1700 to 5500 rpm.

Let’s have a look.

That’s a surprising outcome! What’s happened to Alpina!? I can only guess that they created a car which they based closely on their market research.

  2. Ricky Calo says:

Damn that S8 is an 11 second car!!! Yikes!!! BMW really needs to pick up the slack and start tuning their cars towards the sport side instead of luxury.

  3. auaq says:

Hmmm …. with news like these, we’re going to expect those audi trollers. I hope not!

  4. Truong Giang says:

The Audi was unstable even on the test bench, but he still chose it as the better one? I have no idea!

  5. says:

Its still a VW and made from parts of other cars, Motor is Bentley and now that Porsche is also VW they can add some parts from Porsche, and how bout Lamborgini !! BMW is and will be a BMW all the time, This Alpina was made not for racing in mind but a Luxory car, its the Badge that counts and not a car made from all kind of parts .

    • Steve says:

You do realize that Alpina is actually a manufacturer in its own right? The donor car is a BMW, but the car is sold as an Alpina and not a BMW. And if we’re talking badge cachet, Bentley, Porsche and Lamborghini trump BMW any day of the week.

  6. Skeptic... says:

There must have been something worng with that Alpina’s engine… 50 hp loss in drivetrain and poor throttle response? I’d ask for another one to test just to be sure. Also (lol) I think the Audi was overtuned… I mean, 570 hp, YIKES!! So yeah, great assumptions from me I guess :)

  7. Jules says:

    Very disappointing BMW

  8. Salty says:

If any one is not aware, audi pays for it to win these reviews. The alpina is a car in its own class, its luxury is unsurpassed. Audis are for posers, if u want a car with passion its bmw or bust.

  9. Lacost says:

Another easy and unsurprising win for Audi. And another proof which premium brand is the performance king.

    • Objective says:

Simply disgrace for BMW! I will save money for a brand-new Audi. I was planning to buy a 5 Series, but now I’m more than sure that my new car is going to be an A6. If in all reviews Audi takes the win, they can’t be considered as prepaid reviews. Audi is one head above BMW in everything!!!!!
