BMW will continue to expand their most successful product family, the 3 Series. As we mentioned in the past, the Munich-based automaker will launch next year a “new badge”, 4 Series. The new designation will be reserved for the Coupe and Convertible variants of the 3 Series, which will retain the sedan and touring models. But, 4 Series family will grow in 2014 with a new member: 4 Series Gran Coupe.

The F36 four-door is scheduled to come to market in 2014 and will follow the same design principles, at a smaller scale, as the recently launched 6 Series Gran Coupe. Insiders refer to the the 4 Series Gran Coupe as a “very sexy looking four-door coupe model which will bring the sleek sportiness , premium image and ambiance of the 6er Gran Coupe to the Premium entry sports segment.”  The 4 Series Gran Coupe will compete against the Audi A5 Sportback.

The overall dynamic design would appeal to a younger demographic as well and will be a viable alternative to the high-end 6 Series Coupe.

As expected, BMW will price the vehicle slightly higher than the coupe and convertible variants, similar to how the 6 Series Gran Coupe is being positioned. In the U.S., the entry-level 640i Gran Coupe sells for $87,395 while the 650i variant starts at $90,395.

So BMW decide to call the 2 door 3 series a 4 series….now they’re making a 4 door 4 series and not calling it a 3 series. This is just getting ridiculous now.

      But it’s a rumor’s rumor… :)

No you are mad, this will put the No.of the models in order and easy to understand .

i dont think they are calling the coupe and the car above the 4 series they will just call it the 3 gc. the 3 series coupe has always been priced higher then the 4 door since the e36. the e 21 was a 3 door. so i cant see them getting rid of the 3 series coupe. audi amd mercedes have tried to bring the 3 down please bmw dont do there job for them by killing of the the king. m4 or m3gc

It WILL happen, this has been reported many times before. The 1 series coupe will also become the 2 series, so all even numbered cars will be coupes. There will also be an M3 sedan and M4 coupe/cabrio/GC.

This allows BMW to squeeze out more profit, like Audi has done with the A5 (based on the A4), and Mercedes with the E-coupe (based on the C-class). It also means BMW’s range will be better organised. There will also be a 3 series GT, so 6 versions of the 3-series would be too confusing for the average customer.

The gran coupe is not a coupe so the 3 coupes will remain. This will be a 4GC just like the 6 is a 2 door coupe of the 5er, and the 6GC is a 4 door “coup” of the 5er
