There is something about upgrading a set of wheels on a BMW that instantly transforms the look of that car from a tired daily driver to a performance car almost instantly. In my opinion, no other wheel from BMW does this better than the 18 inch, staggered width, forged M Parallel wheel.
Disclaimer: I have a set on my E38 7 series Sport package daily driver, so my opinion may be slightly biased. They were standard with all sport optioned 7s between 1998 and 2001 and have long been said by many BMW enthusiasts as the sexiest wheel BMW has ever made.
Although I love the simplicity of the wheel; a simple split spoke 5 star design with the perfect amount of polished lip, I also love the wheel for its technical aspect. It’s a single piece forged aluminum wheel that is not only strong and light, but a piece of cake to keep clean compared to some of the more intricate designs seen on newer BMWs.
The M parallel wheels first appeared on the 1994 E34 M5 and as an optional wheel on the 850csi in Europe, and later making an appearance on the special edition E34 M 540 Sport. But the M Parallel gained wide acclaim residing in the wheel arches of the E38 740 M Sport and for the last time in the 2003 E39 540 M Sport.
Sadly, those were the last cars BMW equipped with the M Parallel. Admittedly, I’m happy about that fact since I don’t see many BMWs these days with them on. I feel special that way!
