The mere fact that Andy Warhol painted the BMW M1 Art Car in 23 minutes is an attribute to his genius. Warhol explained the bold, bright and lucid brush and finger strokes on the Art Car BMW M1 thus: ‘I tried to portray a sense of speed. When a car is going really fast all the lines and colors become a blur’.
BMW commissioned Warhol to paint the M1 in 1979 for the LeMans race that year, much like it had done 3 prior times with Alexander Calder, Frank Stella, and Roy Lichtenstein. The Warhol Art Car finished second in class which was considered a victory for such a gorgeous canvas of art.
The Warhol Art Car is still in BMW AG’s possession as most of them are, although occasionally one gets put up for sale. The 1979 Frank Stella M1 which was in the Guggenheim’s collection until recently was Sold to make room for new acquisitions. http://www.bmwblog.com/2011/05/14/bmw-m1-art-car-by-frank-stella-headed-for-the-auction-block/
