When it goes on sale next year, for the first time, BMW has split the 3 Series family into two distinct badges. The new 4 Series Coupe will allow BMW to price the vehicle slightly higher to compete directly with offerings from Audi (A5) and Mercedes-Benz (smaller SLS).

The spy video shows an overall dynamic design with design cues derived from the recently unveiled F30 3 Series. The sleek coupe will become a viable alternative to the higher-end 6 Series Coupe, with character lines running across sides that will enhance not only its sportiness, but also a more luxurious and premium look.

The 4 Series Coupe will be offered in three lines: Sports, Modern and Luxury. Each will differ from each other by offering distinct equipment options.

The 4 Series models will make use of both four and six-cylinder turbocharged engines. The highest-end offering will be the 435i335i. To cater to different type of drivers, the BMW 4 Series Coupe will come equipped with adaptive suspension allowing to adjust the settings by pressing a button.

BMW 4 Series Coupe will make a web debut later this year, followed by the market launch in Spring 2013.

The highest-end offering will be the 335i? Shouldn’t that be 435i?

Everyone keeps talking about the next 3er coupe and conv being called the 4 series and the same for the new 1 and 2 series.

I don’t know if that’s going to happen. When the E90 launched the same rumours we’re going around and it never happen. That was 7 or 8 years ago.

BMW said the board felt the the 3 series coupe had accumulated too much branch cache over the years to change it to the 4 series.

I personally also don’t think they should, keeping in mind that the trend is to simplify models and their monikers, like mercedes now using c,e, and upcoming s class coupes instead of creating new monikers.

Even though the 2 and 4 series would make sense, based on the models they are based on, I would not like to see them go the route of Audi, whose model names often don’t make any sense and having too many of them.

The 4 Series competes with the “smaller SLS”? What are you saying? The concept mini-SLS is a Porsche 911 competitor. Do you mean the SLK? That competes with the Z4 and TT.
This competes with the Mercedes C-Class coupe…
