Patent drawings reveal the rear-end structure of the upcoming F31 BMW 3 Series Touring. The shape of the roof and window line is similar to the one seen on recent spy photos.

The patents also show the rear side wall, bumper and the tailgate, as expected without the taillights which based on the drawings seem to be slightly different than the F30 3 Series Sedan with a sharper form.

In Europe, the entry level model will be the 320d producing 184 horsepower. Next in the line-up is the more powerful 325d which uses the twin-turbo 218 horsepower four-cylinder engine from the 525d. The six-cylinder diesels will make their way into the 330d and 335d, producing 258 horsepower, respectively 313 hp.

Question: how can these images leak from the patent office and every one is ok with it? Lots of patent images gets out in this way. I thought patent stuff would be very sensitive. Especialy auto design stuff. Anybody knows how this works?

Companies file patents ahead of product launches, some make it into production, others don’t, but most of the time, they get filled before.
I’m not an expert on this, but others can chime in.

Also all these patents are public records when approved.
