The following comparison is purely fictional and builds atop the newly released BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe. Rendering artist Theophilus Chin takes the design of the new Gran Coupe and uses it as basis for an alleged 6 Series Gran Tourer, a car with the design cues of a Gran Coupe, but the space and comfort of a Touring.

Mercedes-Benz is the first automaker to bring such vehicle on the road. In 2012, the Stuttgart-based automaker will launch the CLS Shooting Brake, a model with an attractive look, carrying forward the next generation CLS language previewed in the Mercedes F800 Style. The rear end offers a more pronounced coupe look than seen on the BMW 5 Series GT, with a tall roof.

The car features a long hood, narrow-look windows with frameless side windows, and a dynamic roof sloping back towards the rear.

Mercedes aims to position the CLS Shooting Brake above the sports wagon segment, in a niche that offer more exclusivity and premium features.

If the CLS Shooting Brake actually proves to be successful, one should assume that the folks in Munich and Ingolstadt will nervously look around for their own offerings, in BMW’s case, a fourth addition to the 6 Series family.

For now, here is how the artist imagines the looks of a BMW 6 Series Gran Touring.

BMW( I like) it is not like another car.. ultimate car

BMW are actually preparing a Shooting Brake 6er Concept which will be seen soon.
This to signify an approach of adding another model off of the same matrix that is found within the 5er , 5er GT , 6er and 7er and cementing a very Sporting 6er family.

The Shooting Brake is aimed at the luxury market and especially markets like the USA where the conventional euro wagon is all but dead. 6er Shooting Brake is another alternative.

If public and media reaction is favourable. Then expect to see a similar idea applied for the 4er, Which features the same grand style and sportier appearance although smaller in size of the 6er Gran Coupe. Which will allow BMW to have two definitive Sports model families with a range of concepts.

Looks great! I’m real glad to hear about a concept being worked on now.

My motto: The more (variants), the better!

I agree, I don’t have nothing against the cars that I consider not to be very appealing. If they work some people, good for them, good for companies which make these cars. All sides are happy here. And although creating the sligthly changed new body for existing platform, drivetrain and even interior is relatively cheap investment. I consider creating this 6GC Touring as unprofitable business. Not that nobody will buy – for sure, some people would love this car, but there would be not enough for them for BMW to profit from this car.

They won’t make M5 touring, because they sold not many units of the last one (which I personally take to be one of the best car ever in comprasing performance and utility) and I believe that potential buyers of 6GC are be much more like potential buyers of high-end 5-er or even M5, which is rarely chosen in Touring body. Hence I think they will consider making of 6GC Touring as uprofitable business.
