The BMW Z4M might not be dead after all. According to InsideLine, the M division at BMW is working on a proposal to develop a Z4M roadster.

“There are days when it hurts not to have one, but there was no compelling business case at the time when the decision was taken,” Albert Biermann, head of product development told Inside Line. “We are trying to make a case but there are so many factors to consider.”

When the Munich-based company announced the launch of a new Z4 Roadster, everyone wondered when and if a Z4 M version will follow. BMW quickly came forward, and unofficially crushed the dreams and hopes of their fans. With the economic crisis hitting hard every automaker, BMW felt there is no business case for a full-on M version of the Z4.

To alienate the pain, BMW started working on sport version of the Z4. Dubbed Z4 sDrive35is, the enhanced and faster “is” came to the market in 2010 with a 3.0L twin-turbocharged direct-fuel-injected inline-6 and 335 horsepower at 5,900 rpm/332lb-ft of torque.

The Z4 35is is using M-branded parts, both on the inside and outside the car.

Recently, BMW Motorsport Director Jens Marquardt said the company is looking to use the Z4 GT3 in one of the US racing championships.

Furthermore, the Motorsport boss says BMW is now committed to “production car-based racing,” a new entry-level car to allow enthusiasts to progress from track days to racing. “We’d like to do a car that you could buy and run in 6-7 races for around €100,000 ($138,000).”

Could this be the Z4M?

Cmooon BMW! Spoil your fans! We deserve a treat, and so do the ///M engineers ! There is talk that Audi is planning on making a TTRS plus- a lightened version with 385hp.. if the economic times were really that bad than making such a thing shouldnt even be in the question

  3. Mateo says:

forget about z4m, it’s too heavy but again x5 is too heavy and it has M badge

  4. Faust says:

Damn, bring it on BMW! MB has SLK AMG, Audi has TT-RS, how the hell BMW always comes up with “there is no business case” bulshit for cars like that. If anything, we should have a Z4M and NOT an X5M. I mean where is the sense in a X5M?

Just make it and strap on a twin turbo-six with 360-400hp

  5. Pazzi says:

Be brave BMW! Drop the V8 from the E90 M3 into the Z4M… 414HP should get anyone’s heart racing!

  6. Jimmy says:

put the S63Tu in there.  With the right rubber, it`ll do 0-60 in the low 3s

  7. Jimmy says:

A Z4m with the S63Tu would still come in at under 1600Kg roughly 3520 pounds.

  8. Tom says:

I think that you mean “alleviate”, not “alienate”. Is it possible that this rumor may be revived??!!

  9. felixilef says:

The e89 is too heavy and grand tourish to be an M. If they want a new Z4 M, they should bring it back in the stunning E86 coupe body. Now’s that’s a shmick car!
