September sales are out and BMW stays on course to remain the world’s top-selling premium automaker. Last month, the Munich-based automaker reported sales of 128,446 units, a 9.3 percent increase over the same month last year.

Audi continues to challenge BMW as the top premium automaker with an increase of 17 percent or 120,200 units sold globally. Even though Mercedes-Benz showed a small increase, 2 percent, the company retains the second spot with 120,982 units.

“At the end of the third quarter we find ourselves well on course to deliver our target of more than 1.6 million vehicles in 2011 and to remain the clear number one among premium manufacturers once again this year,” BMW’s head of sales Ian Robertson said in a statement Monday.

Global Sales: BMW stays ahead of rivals Audi, Mercedes

Overall sales of BMW Group vehicles including the MINI and Rolls-Royce brands grew 16 percent in the first nine months of the year to 1.23 million units. In September, the group sold 159,214 vehicles, a rise of 11.4 percent.

The top selling BMWs were the new X3 and 5 Series, as well as the entry-level X1 SAV, a vehicle that remains in high demand leading to further delays for the US market. In September, BMW sold 11,345 X3s, a 260.6 percent over the same month in 2010. Due to its high demand in Germany, the X1 sales rose 24.7 percent to 12,535 units. The 5 Series continues to be one of the core models for BMW and the sales come to prove that: 27,811 cars sold in September, 29.7 percent increase.

Another success story comes from MINI and its Countryman vehicle: 76,000 units sold since the introduction to market a year ago.

The ultra-luxurious Rolls Royce also reports impressive numbers, 41 percent increase in 2011 with 2,441 units delivered to customers this year.

Audi is targeting sales of 1.3 million cars this year and by 2015, the company aims to become the world’s top-selling premium automaker. Year-to-date, Audi sold 973,200 units, 17.4 percent increase over 2010.

Sales of the Mercedes brand reached 919,288 units in the first nine months of the year, a rise of 7.6 percent.

Mercedes said last month that sales of its Mercedes and Smart brands will probably surpass 1.35 million in 2010, compared with an earlier forecast of 1.3 million.

This year, the race between the three automakers will once again come to a photo finish.

The growth might be 9.3% this year for BMW but believe me next year it will be much higher as people will be buying the new 1 series and especially the new 3 series like hot cakes. This year is the end of the life cycle for the current 1 and 3 so next year should be looking cushty for BMW with the all new models.

I personally believe that people buy Audis for looks and not for pure driving pleasure. I look beyond their tacky LED lights and see a coated VW platform with a FWD system which gives them a 60/40 balance. At the same time BMW engines got higher BHP, higher MPG and lower emissions than the Audi equivalents. I dunno when Audi came in the game because to me its always been about BMW and Mercedes competing to the bone, they be making the real RWD machines whilst using their F1 experience and technology. Audi consumers need to spend time on finding out on what they are buying and the alternatives they are missing out on. Looks is only one aspect out of many.

What r u smoking bro.. The whole Audi line-up Blows BMW and Merc  out of the water in every which way possible.. People buy BMW’s Because of their cheap leases or because they can’t afford Audi’s. The A4 handles better than the 328xi and C300, gets way better gas mileage, has a faster 0-60 and most importantly holds its value a lot better. Audi doesn’t have customers who are under water when they try to trade or upgrade before their lease or finance is over.. All the cars have equity in them.. I can give you examples if you want. Seems you have no clue what you are talking about. BHP means nothing when your torque is lower than BHP.
      *A4 is 211 Torque is 258,
*A6 is 310 with 325 Torque which also beats the 5 series in every way.
*we don’t use fake leather in any of our products and alarms are not optional
The A8 Is better Built, handles Better than the 7 series
Quattro is built from ground up to be an all wheel drive. X drive is an after thought i.e thats why its electronic and  operates via a transfer case.

BTW if we counted Bentley, Lambo, Bugatti BMW will not be #1

FYI The LED’ technology is the closest recreation of daylight on any car on the road.

WHAT have u been smoking? A4 handles better than the 3 series??? Every review site says 3 series blow A4 and C lass out of the water in handling. The 1 series out handles the A3 too. The 5 out handles the the A6, the x5 out handles the q7. Every single BMW M can out handle every RS and AMG. Do Audi even have experience in formula 1?? lmao thought not. Bentley, Lambo Bugatti? We talking about BMW and Audi dude.

And oh yea how many supercars use Audi engines? I swear mclaren f1, ascari a10 and other supercars use BMW engines too. Im talkin fact here, BMW is the ultimate driving machine. I mean do you even have anything to say about the 60/40 balance that Audis have? And 4WD is for pussies not real driving enthusiasts, even a 5 year old can control a quattro…. it explains why formula 1 and go karts are RWD.

Lets look at some figures shall we:

        2011 520d: 184 bhp, 0-60 mph 8.1, 57.6 mpg

        2011 Audi A6 2.0 TDI: 177 bhp, 0-60 mph 8.9, 57.6 mpg

hmm, the BMW got more BHP while being almost 1 second quicker 0-60 and have the same MPG. And if Audi had more torque howcome its almost 1 second slower 0-60??? These are facts so deal with it. BMW set the standards and the rest follow. Where was RS or AMG when BMW M was born? Get a grip VW fan boy.

The shit you say bears no fruit because you americans dont know about cars like Europeans do. I mean everyone knows that American Muscle cars have the worst chassis ever… but of yea since your an Audi fan boy you tend to go for the cars with a less refined chassis. Listen to what Top Gear says about Audi, they call them a bit time player and the real competition is between bmw and mercedes.

Dont speak on what you dont know.

        • LexusLVR

What an idiot this Manchester clown is. There are so many factors affecting the performance of that 2011 Audi A6 2.0 TDI vs 2011 520d such as weight, gearing and the fact that the Audi is AWD. Big deal. WHO CARES?

And AMG was around way before M. M was founded in the early 1970s. AMGs had been tuning and racing cars since the 1960s.

          • Manchester Man

I was talkin about saloons not racing cars.

          • LexusLVR

Still. Most buyers won’t give a damn if an Audi takes 8.9 seconds to reach 60 mph and a BMW takes 8.1 seconds. IRRELEVANT. Audi products offer AWD (or FWD) which is far better to drive in wet and snowy areas than RWD. BMWs are a bitch to drive in the wet, I speak from experience.

          • Manchester Man

But who in the right mind will race in the snow? And when its wet, its still not the most ideal conditions. Where Im from it rains alot but the dry days outnumber the wet days so a RWD would be much better. They are a bitch to drive in the wet, but if you learn how to control your car in the wet in a BMW you will be alright but you cant so you opt for the AWD… it doesnt sound like the works of a true driver to me. It sounds more like a safe bet.

Albert Nyadu Nkansa Jnr   you dumb ass, audi are overated vws! i wouldnt pay anything over 20,000 pounds for a vw. only idiots would buy a 30,000, 50,000 and even 70,000 pound vw in another silly dress. bmw and benz has always been the benchmark, audi are a joke. anyone familiar with cars knows you buy bmw for the driving pleasure and benz for its luxury! audi does neither well. so why would anyone buy rubbish like that.audi are damn ugly cars, never owned one and never will own one! once a bmw man always a bmw man!

    • zig

what a jerk. vw cars are bad? they are all metal idiot! you pay more for an audi in comparison to a vw because of better materials that are used for interior.
and for the people who praises bmw for being 8 seconds faster… who care? we are not using the cars on rally circuits people! some want comfort, safety and sometime, yes, a bit of fun.

The numbers are impressive considering the fact that the economy is still slow to improve and the industry overall has been struggling.  The competition is certainly good for the auto-makers and ensures that they continue to develop quality vehicles.
