Laguna Seca race track hosted the U.S. introduction of the new 2012 BMW M5. The super sporty sedan made its first debut back in June at the famous Nurburgring and will make its way to the American market in Spring 2012, rejoining the super sporty sedan segment with some tough competitors: Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG, Audi RS6 and Cadillac CTS-V.

The F10 BMW M5 builds atop the elegant and premium design of the new 5 Series sedan. The design language is easier on the eye than the previous E60 generation and the M5 enhances its aggressiveness with the M-specific design cues.

With the new generation M5, the M division delivers what one expects from an M car: aggressiveness, sportiness and elegance. The front spoiler takes the M5 a step further than the 5 Series models with the popular M-package, three large air intakes, blacked out grille and discreet rear spoiler located on the boot lid serves to optimize the car’s aerodynamics.

The new M5 will have a weight distribution of 51% front, 49% rear. The rear exhaust silencers are constructed of titanium and are far smaller than those featured on the series production car. Several kilograms were saved through the application of these silencers, thus the rear end was lightened considerably. As for the sound, the new M5 has an exhaust note uniquely different from that of the S63 found in the X5M and X6M cars.

BMW has moved on with the new F10 M5 from naturally aspirated engines to a TwinPower turbocharged V8. The high-revving 4.4-liter (4395cc) turbocharged uses the BMW M TwinPower Turbo technology, twin-scroll turbochargers, high-precision direct fuel injection, Valvetronic variable valve control and a cross-bank exhaust manifold.

The Valvetronic system has been heavily tuned and modified for the M5 such that turbo lag has been further reduced, and efficiency has been improved. On the test bench at full load the M5 engine shows a 30% improvement in efficiency over the S63 found in the X M cars while making the same power output.

The engine and gearbox have been mounted 20 mm lower in the frame to reduce the car’s center of gravity and improve handling. The engine has also been moved rearward to improve balance.

2012 BMW M5 will output 560 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 501 lb-ft of torque (680 Nm) at 1,500 rpm. The new F10 M5 will run to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 4.4 seconds. To reach 124 mph (200 km/h), the new M5 needs about 13 seconds. Same as the old E60 M5, the M-Drivers-Package brings the top speed to 190 mph (305km/h). The engine is mated to a 7-speed M Double Clutch Transmission Drivelogic. A manual option is being considered for U.S. customers, but no official confirmation has been released at the moment.

Overall weight is reported to be 4,122/4,286lb (DIN/EU).

U.S. Debut: 2012 BMW M5 Born on Nurburgring, ready to go to office

Unofficial Nurburgring lap times place the new M5 on the first position within its class.

Brian Watts, General Manager Global Sales and Marketing for BMW M, describes the 2012 M5 as the perfect combination between a track car and a business automobile. “Born on Nurburgring, ready to go to office, and this is why M is the most powerful letter in the world,” said Brian Watts in front of journalists at Laguna Seca.

BORN ON NURBURGRING, READY TO GO TO OFFICE – says it all.

The best motto I’ve heard in years.

        Are you on crack?

          LOL

      • Mateo

to me, both M5 and Panamera are made for $$$$, and not for drivers/enthusiasts. M5 used to be light, normal size, manual gearbox, straight six high rev engine sedan – today 2 ton, big as 7 series, M-DCT and engine that has more things and electronics than average PC 10 years ago….

4 door porsche is simply not a porsche
big turbo sedan is not an M5, even you stick on it a 100 M5 badges!

      • Fredyschiftan

Panamera is now another VW just like its cheap Audi VW , my friend you live in some name long gone!!! Porsche is no longer a porsche !! and your panamera or Panama  is not a real porsche no more!!!

2012 Nissan GT-R, Born to kick Porsches in general.

You are comparing a 4 door coupe to a proper 4 door Sedan.

There is no such thing as a 4 door coupe.

BMW M engineers worked hard to create the new M5. Yet it’s just 1 second faster on the Nordschleife than the Panamera Turbo. I can just imagine what the upcoming Panamera Turbo S will do to the pathetic m5. This fact alone proves how outdated bmw is compared to Porsche. And the new Audi A6 proves how useless and pathetic the new 5 Series is, since the A6 easily kicks the 5 Series fat ass both on the straight line and on the track. By the way the A6 beats the 5 series by ride comfort as well thus making the 5 absolutely useless like garbage. All I can advice to bmw is to discontinue their pathetic product line-up. FULL STOP!!!

    • Fredyschiftan

You seem to know a lot about cars!! but in reality the King is and will be BMW M5 all those aroubnd are just followers of the M line  period,,,,,,,(Audi VW  Panama or what ever ,,,, )  First is first all other are copies!    just like the iphone all other are copies !!!

      • Babken

If we follow your empty logic, then bmw is a copy of Mercedes-Benz because it was Daimler who invented automobiles.

        • wazon

What the clever reply, you need to be proud of yourself. But I just wonder whether you had an opportunity to see, touch these very first cars. If motorization was consisting on copying these things (as your reply supposes), most likely it would be better to go cycling. Fortunately, the developement consisted on making numbers of revolution rather than evelutions and at the of a day these first cars have much more in common carriages than with any modern cars. If you think that your reply exploited any kind of analogy, you need to be one of the biggest ignorant I’ve ever met. Even girls know more about cars without being interested in their mechanics. And indeed, you simply don’t get what is  the role of M5 and M3 in history of modern motorization. These two made real revolution, since they combined everyday ulitity with the high performance at the scale that hasn’t being known before. Moreover, they’ve got their predecessors in the BMW line up, not in other’s company.

As for your opinion on Panamera Turbo S vs. M5 F10, again you praise slightly better track numbers over handling and feeling. Part of Panamera Turbo S success is constituted by AWD driving train and that’s something I find totally unappealing, because of all well known vices of AWD for sport cars. You’ve got here something really similar to comparision of GT-R with 997 GT3 RS. The first is faster, but loose in terms of feeling and handling and that’s why most enthusiast go for GT3 RS and some of them will go for M5 F10 (if decided to buy M5 over – say – M3). Popularity of AWD high performance cars is most likely due to the fact that they forgive more mistakes and are less demanding to drive them properly. But choosing them is to decide to developing one’s driving skills and let the car to the job. Convenient for sure, but these kind of cars won’t make you as good driver as you could have been.

BTW, you should also wait for Competition Package for M5 F10 before you bash the car. You will easly buy this package and still spend less than on Panamera Turbo S.

          • wazon

“But choosing them is to decide to not* developing one’s driving skills and let the car to the job.” :D

          • Babken

How dare you compare the gayish fat-ass m5 to the almighty Panamera Turbo S? You’re absolutely ridiculous. I can hardly help myself dying from laughter. It’s the same as if you compared Porsche to Tatra (the m5). Better compare your for-gays-only m5 to Mercedes-Benz E350CDI.

          • wazon

I didn’t know that you’re so pathetic. The only further step you can is to bash M3, so feel free.

BTW, how you do associate M5 with sexual preferences is beyond me.

And it would be much more fruitful if you pricely said why you consider me as “absolutely ridiculous”. At the moment, you compared modern cars with carriage equipped with engine and simple steering system. It’s one of the most ridiculous things you’ve said since you became a troll from hardcore BMW fan here. I hope I won’t worry you, but even chimpanzee would notice the difference.

          • Babken

Yes, once I was a hardcore BMW fan, but after seeing how incompetently BMW added weight to the 5 Series and Audi took its chance and lightened the new A6 thus kicking ass of the 5 series, I started to hate BMW’s idiotic policy. Once an ultimate driving machine they now turned their products to absolute losers. And to whom? To Audi. And they don’t feel a shame and boast about their fat-ass 5 series and the m5 perfectly realizing that the upcoming RS6 ill easily smash their pathetic m5 with the same ease as the new A6 kills the 5 Series. I just hope BMW will read this comment and take relevant measures because their blind image makers and engineers are so incompetent that even a 7-year-old child would make a better 5 series than what they made. And what they made can be described with just one word: SHAME!  I’m just so angry with the fact that the new A6 beats the 5 Series in all possible aspects… When the E39 and E60 were terrorizing the midsize premium market that was another story, and everybody respected BMW. But it’s not the case now. Increasingly more and more people lean towards Audi, because they also notice that it’s Audi who now makes ultimate driving machines.
This is all I wanted to say. So please don’t take it personal, Wazon.

          • wazon

Take a look at data before you say something incompetent again. As for making cars fat, you are badly wrong. 535i vs. A6 3.0 TFSi = 1760 vs. 1815 kg. Which one is lighter? 530d vs. A6 3.0 TDi = 1790 vs. 1795 kg. Which one is lighter? You can freely check other data, but instead of that you just prefer to be a moron defending false thesis. Part of ultimate driving machine philosophy is to provide a car with the best feeling, not with the best track numbers at the cost of loosing handling and feeling. And at this point BMW is still superior, although you need to start driving cars first in order to understand why straight line acceleration is not everything, why it’s good to have a car with natural responsiveness, instead of atificial one and why RWD is better drive train than AWD. How many do you need to hear it again and again? After few years of driving, perhaps you will understand. BTW, have you ever driven new 5er and new A6? If you did, you would notice the difference I’m talking about, unless you’re poor driver. Oh, sorry, you don’t have a driving license.

Following your empty logic, Mercedes Benz must be a copy of the powered horse carriages of the early 19th century

First of all, The original Modern Mass Produced Automobile was the Austin 7, which was licensed in BMW as the Dixi (Making them the first Mass Produced Modern German Car) .It was opperated through the 3 pedels we know today as the Clutch, Brake, and Gas. It had a transmission with overdrive opperated on a stick on the floor. It can be steered with a rack and pinion steering wheel. The Benz had neither of those.

Benz didn’t invent that system either, This Modern Automobile Layout was originally patented by Cadillac in its Type 53 car in 1915.

The 5 series was one of the first mid size 4 door sedan cars in post WWII era to offer a sporty character as well as comfort. Created from the First Post-war Sports Sedan, The 2002tii, It quickly gained reputation and status. This was the car that Mercedes, Audi, Lexus, Infiniti, and other companies look up to and strive to surpass it.

Come on Babken, If you can not respond to this in a proper fashion with logic, then it must be sad you just got lectured by an American 16 year old.

I hope you didn’t forget to breathe when writing this comment which is filled up with ignorant anger :) Its totally fine if you prefer Panamera or A6 instead. Here is an advice to you – go to your local Audi or Porsche dealership , buy one, enjoy it, stop posting ignorant comments and most importantly – get yourself a life mate ;)

    • Dude

I have full respect for our senior citizens. But they should have supervision when blocking the roads with their Volkswagens or when posting on the internets.

      • Babken

If Porsche is Volkswagen then bmw is much much lower in status.

I will buy Audi A6 instead of buying that gayish fat-ass f10 5 series. Only losers buy the 5 series now. And kings buy either Audi A6 or Mercedes-Benz E-Class.

      • http://www.facebook.com/Whasians Daniel Vu Nguyen Hoang

Last time I checked, The Saudi Arabian and Bahrain Princes and Kings drove the BMW 5 series as everyday cars along with exotics in there garage.

  • T.

BMW M actually benchmarked amongst many competitors including the Panamera Turbo.
BMW M are confident that the M5 can stand up against the Panamera Turbo in dynamics and performance. However with the advent of the Panamera Turbo S? That is something the M5 CRT would have to respond to in a few years.

Even 5 years before, I can’t imagine a 5 series can grow as big as a 7 series, or is it the blue colour make it seems bigger?
