TeamSpeed.com forum just spotted the upcoming 2013 BMW M6 Coupe and Convertible on US soil. The two test mules were spied in the Californian desert and give us a closer look at the exterior details, as well as glance inside the car.

Both prototypes are riding on 20-inch wheels that reveal the expected large brake calipers. While BMW has yet to reveal the power unit under the hood, we believe the engine found in the new M5 will serve as a starting point for the new M6.

The 4.4 liter V8 turbocharged engine is rumored to produce around 580 horsepower.

Due out in 2012, the new M6 will be available in both Coupe and Convertible variants. The redesigned M6 will have its own attributes and characteristics in order to challenge the established rivals from Porsche, Audi, Bentley, Aston Martin, Jaguar and Mercedes-Benz.

As seen in these new spy photos, the M6 continues to carry the typical wider rear fenders and the usual four-tailpipe exhaust system characteristic to M models. At the front end, a more aggressive and typical M-style bumper with integrated diffuser is included as well.

The test mule showcases big brakes behind the larger wheels and M-signature quad-exhaust pipes out back.

The 2012 BMW M6 is rumored to launch at the Geneva Motor Show next year.

Awesome photos! Liking the carbon interior trim. Can’t wait to see it revealed.

Why M6 engine will produce 580 horsepower, and M5 only 560 horsepowe? :<

to make the M6 a slightly more powerful.  2dr coupe versus 4 door sedan stigma.
don’t worry about that 20HP though, you will not miss it in the M5 ever.

the E60 M5 was a slightly slower car then the M6 (very very slightly) due to the slightly larger weight, but a better handling car due to the longer wheelbase.

I suspect the M6 will be again lighter and more power, so they will elevate the status of the 2dr cpe M6 over the 4 door saloon/sedan M5.

Don’t we all know how it’s going to turn out? Same engine as the M5, maybe a slight boost in performance. Interior will also feature the same found in the M5. What else would they do?

subtle small changes to the M6 compare to the M5. Just enough to keep it a tad higher level.  Not something any M5 owner will notice or miss, but the fat price-tag demands a little extra.

Boy, that looks good! I get a feeling that this design will lend itself nicely to the M treatment.

Coupe? Convertible? Or both together? I really hope that the new M6 convertible will be available for summer 2012. Would be, at least, a logical step to introduce the convertible prior to coupe.
