Autoblog gives us the first drive review of the new 2012 BMW 6 Series Coupe. The latest addition to the 6er family was unveiled last week at a press event in Munich and it will go on sale in the United States this fall.

At launch time, the new 6 Series Coupe will be offered in both the 640i and 650i variants, along with an xDrive version. Europeans will get an additional model, the highly-fuel efficient, yet powerful 640d. Let’s have a look at their review:

“We’ve been told and retold that the discrepant front end with its schnozzola double kidneys and heavily recessed lights was a solution concocted to satisfy global pedestrian impact regulations. BMW designers have basically told us that this new 6 Series was selected by company authorities spanning the Atlantic as the first major new model designed to live up to all of these regulations. Or maybe they just felt picked on and needed an ear to bend.

Autoblog: First Drive 2012 BMW 6 Series CoupeWe worked this 640i Coupe on the autobahn and on the many squeaky clean and manicured twisting two-lanes southeast of Munich where the low hills start to rumple up toward the Bavarian and Austrian Alps. Here, the 640i’s 3.0-liter six with its hardworking twin-scroll turbo and Valvetronic proved to be a great driver according to our right foot, hands on the wheel and the ol’ inner ear bone. Bundle its 316 horses (peaking between 5,800 and 6,000 rpm) and the 332 pound-feet of torque (1,300 to 4,500 rpm) with BMW’s latest iteration of Driving Dynamics Control, optional Integral Active Steering ($1,750) and active roll stabilization ($2,000), and you’ve got a recipe for good times.

The last 6 Series was absolutely never this polished over the road – at least not without an M logo on its decklid. Sitting still, the lock-to-lock of the Servotronic power steering is just 2.0 turns, so the maneuverability of this big 2+2 is actually pretty damned good in tight quarters.”

The reviewer holds nothing back in bashing the front end design, but that’s one of the few things that we can judge for ourselves without actually driving the car! I love the look of the front end, so obviously Autoblog and I disagree.

To get hung up on the design the way this reporter did, is nothing other than bad journalism. It made everything else he said hard to buy, because you know it’s all based on his opinion and not fact or reality. Pity!

I actually dig the new design, parted the horrible bungle ways.
Not the prettiest maybe but it is so much better then the bungle design car that it falls into a different category.
as far as the ride and handling, nothing new under the BMW-Sun. Almost all of their cars of late rides and handles better then the previous generation.
The bungle cars weren’t bad to drive them at all, just had a face/rear only a  mother (father in this case) could love.

This new model represents a huge steps in forward thinking, better design, better economy and of course better handling and ride. Runflats are becoming better too, so they will not hurt the careful suspension tunings.
The 6 is after all based on the 5 series cars, which is a good platform to fall back on.  The new 6 will make their owners happy and stylish.  Performance figures are excellent and the car is economical in its own way too.
Price tag seems a tad too high but given that Audi and MB are raising their less then stellar competition cars prices at the same level, its acceptable.

The 640d sounds amazing, 313bhp with an mpg of over 40 sounds excitin, this will definitely be ideal for the UK where it cost around £1.36p for a litre of fuel!

I dont understand why everyone is being so critical and over analytical over the looks of this this car. I mean just look at it!! It looks stunning, believe me when you see it on the road you will be in awe at how amazing it looks. Great job with the 6 series bmw you did me proud as a fan.

They f*cked up the design compared to the concept.
