Autocar placed the BMW 1M against what it is considered in Europe, its main competitor: Porsche Cayman R. Looking from a price point, the comparison is somewhat uneven, the Cayman R is about 40 percent more expensive than the 1M, a factor that seems to decisively weight in 1M’s favor.

With 330 horsepower, the Cayman R offers marginally less power than the 1M (340 hp), but to overcome the power difference, it weighs less: 1,408 kgs vs 1,536 for 1M. The mid-engine placement helps the Porsche sprint to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 4.8 seconds, slightly slower than the 1M and its 4.6 seconds. But the Porsche makes up the difference and more from 0 to 124 mph: 16.4 seconds vs. 17.8 seconds for 1M.

Porsche Cayman R is 1M’s toughest opponent. The car sports bucket seats, loops for closing the doors and no air conditioning or radio, keeping the weight very low.

Who takes the final win? Let’s have a look.

sounds like based on the price difference the 1M ought to be getting compared to the Cayman S, not the Cayman R.  The Cayman S still costs more than the 1M, and it weighs closer to the 1M, and it has all the creature comforts the 1M has that the Cayman R doesn’t (like a stereo, air conditioning, sound deadening, etc.).

basically the 1M can be a daily driver, like the Cayman S.  The Cayman R is a toy that you’d want a second car for as a daily driver.

    the porsche is sooooo ugly.

I don’t quite get why these two cars get compared to each other. They are simply two kinds of cars. Apples and pears. Yes both are fruits, but fundamentally different; the idea is that they are basically intended for different purposes, starting with the price, and finishing with all that interior space in the BMW.

Why are people comparing these two god damn cars. The Cayman R is a car for the track and costs WAY more. How are people this stupid.

  • Nnnn

Yeah, that’s pretty much the expected result of comparing these.

I think it’s a fairly appropriate comparison, although it would have been better to wait for a 1-M GTS or CSL, or use a Cayman S instead.   Still, these are both performance variants of each company’s lower-end cars, which are similar enough and target a similar enough owner to compare them.

Uneven matchup, even if matchups between any two chosen cars are reasonably fun.  In US prices, 1-series M = $46,135 MSRP, while Cayman R = $66,300 MSRP (you can almost buy a Miata for the difference).  Then there’s the 4-passenger 1M vs. the 2-passenger Cayman; and at last the biggest difference of all: the Cayman is a classically defined Sports Car.  The 1M is the closest thing to a Pony Car (almost a 2-door sedan) that BMW does.

Can there be any doubt?  Of course the 1M wins.  Now, about that Laguna Seca Blue…
