What initially started as a rumor around Audi’s future plans to offer their super sporty S6 and S7 with diesel engines, it eventually turned into a less sensational topic. According to Car and Driver, quoting Audi’s execs, the Ingolstadt-based company will offer two high-end diesels for their A6 and A7 models.

The two vehicles will feature a highly tuned version of Audi’s 3.0-liter diesel V-6 that should top 300 hp and 450 lb-ft of torque. With the strict U.S. emission regulations, the high-end diesels will be available in Europe only, a similar move made by BMW with their more powerful diesel units.

These diesel-powered A6 and A7 cars will give Audi a rival to models like the BMW 535d, which offers 295 hp and 442 lb-ft, and the Mercedes-Benz CLS350 CDI – 262 hp and 457 lb-ft.

Audi to offer tuned up diesels for A6 and A7In the United States, BMW currently offers two diesel models, the 335d Sedan and the high-seller X5 xDrive35d. Rumors say a 535d model might arrive in the future.

As far as diesel powerplants in the S6 and S7 sporty models, Audi says no plans at the moment. But BMW had something to comment on an M diesel offering. BMW UK product manager James Morrison said the following in a conversation with Autoblog UK:

“We never say never. I don’t think M or BMW are willing to get hooked up in what’s happened in the past. They will always look to the best solution for the best performance and everyday usability.”

More on this topic shortly!

Whenever I read articles regarding diesels, I look forward to see the power produced and whether they will be coming to the states. Most articles however mention that the engines are not state legal and do not meet the requirements. Someone mind posting an article about what are those state legal requirements for a diesel engine to make it state side?

So, 335d in USA has only ~265hp unlike in Europe 286hp, due to strict emission regulations?

Yes, I was always baffled by it. I don’t understand why you guys don’t get the same engines we do, here in Europe. Knowing that Americans usually love powerful engines I thought it was a weird move to detune the engine, but it seems it was the only way they could sell it.

Diesel fuel grade in Europe is different than here in the US. hence the HP disparity.

      • Otto

        Nein!
The loss of power is due to the NOx filter that equip the US Diesel versions.

        • Manny Antunes

Although you are correct. I was referring to this.
“However the difference in minimum cetane number might be noticeable in that the EU diesel running in the U.S. might have a little less power and may be noisier since it is tuned and optimized for the higher cetane number fuel.”

            Nein!!
The figures provided by makers are those obtained with the lowest quality fuel (petrol or Diesel) where a model is made available.  For instance, the RON index for petrol in the USA barely reaches 93, whereas in Europe it could reach 102, most common being 95 and 98. But the specs for a given petrol engine are the same on both sides of the Atlantic.

Its good to hear about the diesel engine technology for Audi A6 & A7, because diesel is a better fuel for highways and long roots

All good comments, but do people realize the national economic opportunity we have in migrating to diesel in the U.S.?
