German magazine Auto Motor Und Sport takes the new BMW 1M to the Hockenheim race track. The outcome? Nothing short of impressive. The 1M was clocked at 1:14.1 minutes, faster than the M3 Coupe with DCT gearbox, 1:14.2 minutes.

The 340 horsepower “baby-M” was also nearly a second faster than the Audi TT RS (1:15) and the RS5 Coupe (1:15.3). The Porsche Cayman S with manual transmission fell a bit short as well 1:14.3, but the PDK driven Cayman S lapped below the 1 Series M Coupe 1:13.9. As an interesting tidbit, the 1M was only 0,6 seconds slower than M3 E46 CSL.

As expected, the 40% more expensive Cayman R with PDK transmission remains the fastest with 1:12.4 around Hockenheim.

From 0 to 62 mph, the 1M clocked in at 4.7 seconds. Furthermore, the 124 mph (200 km/h) came at 17.2 seconds.

Bottom line is that the road test editor Anja Wassertheurer is very impressed by the latest model from Garching and leaves no doubt that experienced drivers can have a lot of fun with the new 1M.

    The most important factor to me is that the 1M comes to its knees before Cayman R. Porsche is the king. 1M is just a mediocre crap.

      What an incredibly intelligent response, Babken. You are a very thoughtful person and profound thinker. I stand in awe of your logic and wit. Of course, a Formula 1 McClaren is faster than a Cayman R, so Porsche is just mediocre crap. Now there is some unimpeachable reasoning, indeed.

      Since plaxico and viper disappeared, you’ve decided to become troll here. I assume that you recognized the difference between 1M and Cayman R. First is heavier, but it offers real rear seat, whereas Cayman R is rather two seater car and hence it’s lighter. So, there is nothing really suprising about performance difference in favour of Cayman R and I really don’t know why people insist to compare these two cars. I see RS3 as its main rival, not Cayman R. As each regular M-car, 1M is designed to be everyday sport car. And it’s pretty obvious that Cayman R failed test for being everyday car, whereas RS3 seems to pass it. Since I assumed that you recognized these obvious differences, I believe that you wanted to heat some stupid debate here, which is – on its own – typical sing of trolling.

      The Cayman R is a far superior car to the 1M car and any BMW in terms of handling/dynamics/precision/etc. A jb4 isnt going to give you cayman R type results on hockenheim or any track really.
      End of the day, they are two different types of cars.

    It seems that M3 e92 achieved 1.14:00 at Hockenheim Short ( http://fastestlaps.com/cars/bmw_m3_e92.html ). Nevertheless, 1M got really great result and proved to be real sport car.
